The book represents the first edition of the first volume of the study P. S. Rahmana, which focuses on the role of censorship in Russian cultural life from the pre-Petrine era to the beginning of this century. The basis of the book was a course given by Professor Ramanam in 2001-2003 at the University of Tartu (Estonia). The focus of the author - not so much a history of censorship Department, as the history of relations between the authorities and society, seen through the prism of the prohibitions imposed by the authorities on public life. For the present edition the text has been annotated, a name index and list of cited sources.
