In the French essay the second half of XVII - beginning of XVIII century the Royal court is often characterized as a kind of "country" or "region". Peak of popularity of this geographical metaphor, apparently, coincides with the beginning of the personal reign of Louis XIV and the construction of Versailles when the court finally left Paris. But it appeared somewhat earlier, during the Fronde, against the opposition of the Royal power and Parliament, and the rebellion of the aristocracy. However, historical circumstances have only partially explain the problem. The book traces the linguistic, literary and cultural origins of metaphor related to the rhetorical skills of the educated class of XVI-XVII centuries, namely, with his characteristic habit to use ready-made linguistic formulae. This aesthetics of "common places" is a specific type of sociability, and, ultimately, the political model of resistance to the "age of Louis XIV".
